Closed Lid Mixing: Folding Impellers

Mark Hennis - President of INDCO, Inc. tote mixer with folding impellers

Open container mixing is typically the most prevalent form of mixing; however, it is occasionally necessary to mix in containers with closed lids. In such cases, Folding Impellers can be used. These impellers are designed to enter through small container openings then expand to their full operating diameter as the mixer shaft rotates.

Key advantages provided by folding impellers:

  • Access to Restricted Openings: They fit through small container openings, making them ideal for containers that are not easily accessible.
  • Contamination Control: By allowing for mixing in a closed environment, they minimize the risk of external contamination.
  • Efficient Mixing: Despite their compact design, they expand upon operation to ensure thorough mixing.
  • Easy Cleaning: The closed-lid mixing process significantly reduces splashing and spillage, making cleanup easier.
  • Versatile Use: Compatible with various mixer types, including handheld mixers and drill motors, they offer flexibility in application.

Our standard 2-blade folding impellers, the FP-series, are sized for use with 2” bungs up to 6” IBC tote openings.  Bung-entering impellers, whether in pails or drums, expand to 4” or 7” depending on the application and available horsepower from the mixer.  Standard mixer models featuring folding impellers have as many as four impellers on the shaft.  Larger models, for the 6” tote openings, come in 10”, 12” and 14” sizes.

All folding impellers are available in 304 or 316 stainless steel (models 10” and larger are by quote only). We also offer plastic folding impeller options of 2-3/8” and 4” diameter with our PPS-series. Finally, we offer a number of folding impellers mounted to mixing shafts that are suitable for handheld mixers or drill motors.  They range from 2” to 8” in operating diameter.
